Maximizing efficiency with BLE bed displays used as IoMT gateways for simplified installation and integrated monitoring

A real-time patient monitoring service that allows tracking patients’ locations and vital signs at the bedside level has been officially introduced at Yongin Severance Hospital.

People and Technology (CEO: Hong Seong-pyo), a digital healthcare solution provider, announced on the 15th that it has successfully implemented its real-time patient monitoring system at Yongin Severance Hospital, based on its IoMT (Internet of Medical Things) platform IndoorPlus+ SmartCare, and that the system is now in official operation.

This newly introduced system can detect signs of patient deterioration in real time at the bedside and immediately alert the medical staff. Notably, it draws attention from the medical community for utilizing existing bedside information displays as BLE gateways, eliminating the need for additional infrastructure installation.

■ Structural Efficiency Using Existing Infrastructure – Bedside Display as IoMT Gateway

The key feature of this deployment is that it enables BLE signal collection at the bedside without installing separate BLE scanners.

Yongin Severance Hospital was already operating bedside information displays in its wards. This project repurposed the built-in BLE modules in these displays as IoMT gateways, enabling real-time monitoring.

Whereas conventional RTLS systems typically require separate BLE scanners (V3) in the wards to collect patient location data, this case reuses existing infrastructure, earning high praise for simplified installation, improved system integration, and efficient maintenance.

■ Real-Time Integrated Monitoring of Location and Vitals

Inpatients wear a wearable biometric device called HiCardi, which measures key vital signs such as heart rate, respiratory rate, and skin temperature. These measurements are automatically transmitted through the BLE module of the bedside display terminal.

The data is then integrated with the patient’s location data into the IndoorPlus+ SmartCare platform and delivered in a visual format to medical staff via the monitoring system, ward nurse stations, and EMR systems.

This setup allows for a swift response to changes in the patient's condition, with automatic alerts triggered by abnormal vital signs and comprehensive bedside-level management enabled.
